Introduction Satellites and Super Satellites (Satellites are usually one table and Super Satellites are multi-table) are poker tournaments in which the prize is an entry into a larger tournament. Satellites and Super Satellites are an inexpensive way to win an entry into a tournament with a high Buy-In.
Chris Moneymaker famously parlayed a $40 online satellite entry into a $2.5 million payday for winning the World Series of Poker Main event in 2003.
Satellite Tournaments Explained This is an example of how a satellite would work: The Buy-In for the main tournament is $1,000 + $100. The Buy-In for the satellite is $110 + $10. If there are 10 entrants (into the satellite) first place will win an entry into the main tournament. If there are 20 entrants then the top two finishers would win an entry into the main tournament. If there are 24 entrants then the top two players would win an entry into the main tournament and third place would pay $440.
Satellites can be either single table sit and go’s or multi-table tournaments.
Re-Buys and Add-Ons In some multi-table satellites players are given the option of buying more chips during the tournament:
The Re-Buy option allows players to purchase more chips for a set length of time (usually the first hour of the tournament) when they run out or go below the amount of chips with which they started. Some tournaments allow unlimited Re-Buys during the Re-Buy period of the tournament while others allow only a set number (usually 1 or 3) of Re-Buys.
The Add-On option is similar to the Re-Buy option, but is offered only once at the end of the Re-Buy period and can be used regardless of how many chips you have.
All proceeds from Re-Buys and Add-Ons are added to the prize pool.
