This past week saw the EPT Warsaw Championship Main Event play out at the Casinos Poland at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. After the action was complete, French businessman Christophe Benzimra was crowned the ’09 champion. The final table was great battle with a few epic hands. One hand in the late stages of the final table that contributed to Benzimra’s win was against the eventual third-place finisher, Oleksandr Vasefirer. In this hand Oleksandr Vasefirer raised the action to 120,000 pre-flop which Benzimra promptly called, and the two saw a flop of Ac-5d-4s. Benzimra check-raised a 150K bet from Vaserfirer to 300K, the same min-raise move he made in an earlier hand against Vaserfirer that got him to muck. But this time Vasefirer made the call and the turn card came down 4d. This time Benzimra came out betting 300K and once again Vaserfirer called the bet to see the river card.
After the 7s hit the board, Benzimra made his move and shoved in the remainder of his chips, a little more than a million in total. Vaserfirer had about 1.7 million left in his stack and agonized over his next move for a moment or two before making the call. When Benzimra flipped over A-J Vaserfirer tried to muck his hand so no could see how he had played it, but the tournament staff ruled that because it was an all-in situation his cards must be turned face up. Surprisingly Vaserfirer was holding 8c-5c for second pair/ace high.
Vaserfirer apparently didn’t think that Benzimra was holding an ace and called off most of his stack on a hunch that his pair of fives was good. He picked the wrong time to try to make a hero call and catch an opponent bluffing, and it ended up costing him what could have been hundreds of thousands of dollars had he saved his chips and went deeper into the tournament.
