The 2009 WSOP was filled with great plays from great players. Getting good value on your big hands is essential to having a good finish in one of these entrant-laden events. Fabian Quoss did just that at this year’s WSOP when he had a big hand against Danny Illingworth in the $5K No Limit Holdem Event #15. The hand began when Quoss opened the betting from under the gun with a raise, raising the action to 100K pre-flop. Danny Illingworth was sitting in the big blind and decided he would defend them with a call.

Illingworth checked a flop of 2d-Qs-2c to Quoss, who bet out 125K after a moment in the tank. Illingworth made a quick call and the two saw a turn card of Kd. This card looked scary when it hit the board, and once again Illingworth checked the action to Quoss. One would expect to make a smaller bet in this situation to get a read on, or to gain some information from, an opponent. But instead they both checked and the river brought the 4s. This card meant nothing to the hand, and it looked like the remainder of the action would consist of two more checks.
But that’s not the way it went. After Illingworth checked the action for the third time Quoss came out betting a sum of 350K. This bet seemed suspicious because Quoss checked the turn card, and the river was an insignificant card that could only hurt if your opponent was holding pocket fours. Illingworth insta-called the bet but was surprised to see the A-Q that Quoss was holding. It’s likely that Quoss had the lead in the hand all along, but the check on the turn was the best play he could have made. Checking threw off his opponent from the range that he could have been playing, and gave Illingworth what looked like an opportunity to take a stab at an orphaned pot.
Illingworth couldn’t help but call the river bet because the check on the turn made it seem like he was holding nothing. Even with moderate holdings it would have been tough to muck to the 350K bet. Quoss trapped Illingworth into believing he was bluffing when he wasn’t, which ended up turning into a nice payday in a situation that likely would have brought little action.
