Traditional draw theories discuss how pot odds can help you determine if you’re making a good decision on whether or not to call a bet that may have been made by an opponent. If the odds of improving your hand into a winner are equal or better than the percentage of the bet that’s been made, it’s a good decision to call the bet and try to draw out on your opponent. But traditional theory is just that, and today’s top players do a lot more with their draws than just calling bets that have good draw odds.
GET PAID TO PLAY POKER NOW Big draws like flush draws or open-ended straight draws present one with the opportunity to force the action on your opponents by semi-bluffing your draw when it seems that it’s the right time to do so. Instead of a check/call scenario when you have a big draw, you can instead check raise an opponent’s bet with their draw, especially if the bet is from a late position player or an overly-aggressive opponent. Only calling a bet to see another card will often lead to you having to fold your hand on the turn, or worse, on the river.
Check/raising your draws or betting them into opponents while out of position shows opponents that you have a big hand. Unless your opponents are sitting on a big hand they’ll be forced to fold the pot to you because of the bold play that you made. Putting in a small raise will usually be cheaper than calling bets on the last two streets. The raise on the flop or turn will at least be putting up a fight for the pot, and if your opponent remains in the hand you’ll know that you’re likely up against something big.
Sometimes your opponent will shove in the rest of their chips when you make the check/raise on them. In this spot you have to take into account the situation that’s in front of you. Sometimes (usually in a tournament) it makes sense to call this all-in bet if your stack size is bigger than your opponent’s stack size. You have the outs to hit your hand, and you won’t be knocked out of the game if the right card doesn’t come for you. Why not try out some of these skills right now at Pinnacle Poker!
