The nature of poker has changed over the last few years. Many of the strategies that we’ve learned are now outdated. A simple strategy like playing premium hands must evolve with the changing times. Traditional ways to play these hands are rarely profitable, and are often sure signs of what your holdings are to a keen opponent. Playing big pairs properly is dependant on the situation that you’re in, but the idea is still the same - get your chips in early in the hand if possible.
GET PAID TO PLAY POKER NOW Playing big pairs pre-flop has traditionally been based on your position. If you were in an early position it was usually best to slow-play the big pair and hope that someone would raise up the action from the later positions. It made no sense to raise these big hands pre-flop from an early position because most or all of your opponents would fold out of the hand, leaving you with only the blinds as profit. If you were in a late position you could raise your big pair for value because it’d be more likely that you’d get action on the raise because of your position.
Today that type of knowledge is widespread. Decent poker players can sniff out a limp followed by a re-raise from a player playing from under the gun with a premium hand. In order to get action on your big hand it takes a little more trickery to lure your opponents into the hand. Instead of checking the action from an early position with a big pocket pair you can come into the hand with a small to medium raise. If the raise is too big then you won’t get the desired action. Raises should be big enough to only attract the looser players, and should also be big enough to clear out most of the other players in the hand so you’re not up against slim odds.
If you slow play these hands from late positions, especially the button, your hand will be well camouflaged and you can make your move a little later in the hand. As long as you don’t run into a better hand like two pair you’ll be fine, and the hand will be profitable. Why not try out some of these skills right now at Pinnacle Poker!
